“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16 · NKJV
A world of people—including you
When John 3:16 speaks of the “world,” it means the world of people. God’s love is not limited to one nation or language, or to people with a particular religious background. You are included in the world He loves.
Yet the verse also speaks of perishing. The world God loves is separated from Him by sin. Our need is deeper than encouragement or a fresh start: we need forgiveness and life from God.
The Creator came into His world
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God and Creator of all things. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3, NKJV).
The One who made the world came into the world He had made. John 1:10 tells us that He was in the world, that the world was made through Him, and that the world did not know Him.
God’s love was shown at the cross
God gave His Son. The Lord Jesus lived without sin, and willingly gave His life for sinners. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3, NKJV). He was buried and rose again.
At Calvary, the Creator gave Himself for His creatures so that guilty sinners could be forgiven and brought back to God.
What does God ask of you?
John 3:16 says, “whoever believes in Him.” Believing is personal trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He has done for you. Forgiveness and eternal life cannot be earned by religious observance, church attendance, or good works.
John 3:18 says that the one who believes in Him is not condemned. God has given eternal life, and that life is in His Son: “He who has the Son has life” (1 John 5:12, NKJV; see also verse 11).
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31, NKJV).
God loves you. Will you personally trust His Son?
